Please Please Please Leave A Message.....

I've noticed that most people except for Dave and myself feel a little shy about leaving a message on the blog. Don't feel shy....

We can discuss about lots of things and it's supposed to be fun. It's nearly Christmas so go on make an English teacher happy and Dave too. Post a message on the blog. Please tell me how you feel about Christmas.

Thanks

Juliet

PS Thanks for your email Dave...it's not easy to get people to participate but we'll keep going and trying....Have a great Christmas.

The Christmas break

With Christmas less than two weeks away, most families in England are now deciding how they intend to spend the period from 24th December to 2nd January.

When I was young, the only public holidays at this time of the year were Christmas Day and Boxing Day (26th December).

It was only a few years later that New Years Day (1st Jan) was declared a public holiday in England.

In the past many people took time of work and spent the whole of the Christmas period at home with their families.

Most offices have minimal staff in work during this period.

However with the changes in retail trading that have occurred over the last few years, many people now work on the public holidays of 26th December and 1st January in the large shops in the UK.

Personally, I usually stop work just before Christmas and return to work on or about the 2nd January.

What traditionally happens in France during this period?

Qu’est ce que vous pensez ?

Dave

Wishing you a good run up to Christmas

This is Estelle enjoying some pretend snow in France last year....yes a whole year has flown by!
Not long to go now...are you all ready? I have a question. What are you going to eat for your special Christmas meal and when are you going to eat it?

Please feel free to put a comment

Smoking in public in the UK

I noticed from the earlier postings that there was a certain number of entries regarding the subject of smoking in public places.

Opinion of this subject is usually very emotive as it normally polarizes people – most people are either for or against it and very few people sit on the fence.

This subject has been the subject of new legislation in the UK over the last year or so. Ireland and Scotland already ban smoking in public places. From next April it will be banned in Wales.

A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that smoking in enclosed public places in England would be banned from 1st July 2007.

What will become of the English pub culture? Will it survive? Smoking has always been an integral part of our pubs.

My favourite pub is very smoky. The publican also smokes.

Personally I do not smoke but I put up with it when I am out.

It will be very different from next July.
